Who needs to be ready?
From 6 April 2026, MTD becomes mandatory for anyone with a combined total gross income over £50,000 from:
- Self employment, and/or
- Property rental
What will change?
Making Tax Digital will require you to:
- Maintain digital records of income and expenses
- Submit four quarterly updates through compatible software
- File a year end Final Declaration (like a Self Assessment return)
Quarterly reporting periods
The reporting deadlines for both tax year and calendar year ends are the same as follows:
Deadlines
| Quarter | Tax-Year Period | Calendar-Year Period | Deadline |
| Q1 | 6 Apr – 5 Jul | 1 Apr – 30 Jun | 7 Aug |
| Q2 | 6 Jul – 5 Oct | 1 Jul – 30 Sep | 7 Nov |
| Q3 | 6 Oct – 5 Jan | 1 Oct – 31 Dec | 7 Feb |
| Q4 | 6 Jan – 5 Apr | 1 Jan – 31 Mar | 7 May |
Final Declaration
At the end of the tax year, each taxpayer must submit one Final Declaration which will be like the normal Self-assessment Tax Return.
The Final Declaration:
- Brings together all quarterly submissions
- Covers all businesses and property income sources
- Includes any other taxable income (e.g., interest, dividends)
- Calculates the final tax position
The deadline to submit the Final Declaration and pay any tax due remains the same i.e.:
- 31 January following the end of the tax year
- Payments on account (if applicable) remain due on 31 January and 31 July
Making Tax Digital: We can take away the burden
Our Making Tax Digital service is available for new and existing tax clients.
How does our MTD service work?
1. You send your information how you want
Each quarter we send you a reminder to send us your income and expenses for your rental or self employment activities. It is important to note that:
- You can send this in any format you use, such as Excel or manual records, scans and receipts.
- If you use a letting or property management company, you can give us authorisation to handle this directly with them.
- If you do already use a compliant accounting software such as Xero, Sage or QuickBooks, you can (if you prefer) submit your own MTD quarterly returns and we will review and complete just your year end final declaration.
2. We complete the quarterly declarations
Once we have received your information, we will prepare the quarterly declaration using our MTD compliant software, and you will receive a draft for approval before we submit this to HMRC.
Please note that these quarterly declarations are updates, not final figures. They can be amended in later quarters if income or expenses change. However, if we receive accurate information each quarter, your final tax return should be simpler.
3. We complete the final declaration
When it comes to your year end final declaration, we will complete all the steps that we would normally handle as part of our self assessment tax return service, including:
- Preparing your tax return on your behalf
- Performing all required tax calculations
- Bringing your attention to tax reliefs, allowances and repayments that are due
- Checking you are on the correct tax codes
- Liaising with HMRC on your behalf
- Submission of your tax return upon your approval
4. Relax, you are Making Tax Digital compliant
